What’s New from the World of Cannabis

Missouri Milestone: 100,000 Cannabis Convictions Expunged

The state of Missouri has reached a transformative moment in cannabis justice, successfully expunging nearly 100,000 cannabis convictions as part of the state's adult-use amendment, which was approved by voters last year.
The expungement initiative prioritizes misdemeanor clearances by June 8, 2024, and will extend this process to felony convictions by December 8. Missourians are witnessing a significant step in illuminating the shadows cast by a century of marijuana prohibition in the state.

Advocates for cannabis criminal justice reform, including Dan Viets, who co-wrote this constitutional amendment, express concern about the courts honoring the legal deadlines, affirming that as long as the courts 'are making a good-faith effort to comply, advocates will be satisfied.' Vigilance from Dan Viets and cannabis criminal justice reform advocates is ushering in an era of communities actively contributing to legal cannabis reform.

In this narrative of blazing justice, cannabis businesses play a key role by creating tax revenue for the state, enabling illuminating reform and positive societal changes.

Dare To Know: 40 Tons' Compassionate Prison Letter Campaign

40 Tons co-founders Corvain Cooper and Loriel Alegrete (C) Kaitlin Culucundis-Parry @shootpeople_

Today, we're thankful that cannabis is a thriving industry in the United States, with legal adult-use sales in 24 states, the District of Columbia, and 3 US territories, along with decriminalized status in 7 states. There are over 42,000 active cannabis business licenses in the United States, and nearly $3 billion in retail cannabis taxes were collected in 2022. However, cannabis crime statistics reveal a stark contrast to this industrial abundance. In 2022, the number of cannabis arrests exceeded 225,000, and over 30,000 people were imprisoned for cannabis convictions in the United States.

In an effort to let those 30,000-plus people know that they have not been forgotten, 40 Tons is daring people to care. 40 Tons is a lifestyle brand rooted in social restorative justice, with a mission to inform these individuals that they are not forgotten. The group is at MJBizCon cannabis business convention in Las Vegas this week. They aim to collect 10,000 postcards at the convention to send to prisoners incarcerated for cannabis offenses, with the hope of sharing peace and solace with the incarcerated.

Corvain Cooper, Co-Founder, and Lead Brand Ambassador of 40 Tons, shares, "Getting mail while I had the life sentence helped me a lot. It let me know that people didn't forget about me. In the prison I came from, most people were abandoned and many had life sentences like me. So, I'll always appreciate those who wrote to me."

40 Tons is an organization supporting social justice for the people that matter over profits. For more about 40 Tons, visit 40tons.co.
