What's Happening In Cannabis?

Adult use sales in 2023
Cannabis sales across the country are booming this year. Some states recorded record sales this year, including New Mexico, Montana, and Maryland. The state of Maryland had total monthly sales average of more than $8.9 million. Maryland is likely to see continued increased monthly sales since legalizing adult-use in July 2023.

Cannabis Banking Interest Blooms
The US Senate Banking Committee will hold a meeting to discuss amending the SAFE Banking Act this week. The SAFE Banking act provides guidance for banking regulations for cannabis businesses. Banks are showing increased interest in funding cannabis-based business, but there is still risk for them to work with cannabis businesses, even in fully legalized states. In Maryland, a state official who was discussing cannabis tax revenue recently said “to protect the banks, we can’t even call this cannabis on the tax return”, in order to avoid identifying legal marijuana tax revenue on financial forms.
The US Senate Banking Committee will meet Wednesday September, 27, 2023. The result from this meeting can show if the future outlook is favorable for increased support of cannabis businesses from banks, and favorable tax deductions for businesses.

Marijuana Reschedule Recommended
The US Department of Health and Human Services issued a historic recommendation to US Drug Enforcement Agency, to move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III enforcement. Under Schedule III, cannabis will remain federally prohibited. The recommendation is a positive sign of increased government collaboration to understand the scientific benefits of cannabis. The DEA will make the final decision whether or not to reschedule. There is no formal date for the review.
