What’s New From the World of Cannabis

Long-Time Legal Marijuana Worker Jailed on Weed Charges
Jumal George, 33, a budtender at Housing Works Company in New York is currently being held in Rikers prison. Jumal was arrested for a warrant from cannabis-related charges in Pennsylvania, where recreational marijuana is still illegal. He was sentenced to 7 days in Rikers, though a week later, he is still being detained waiting to be extradited to Pennsylvania. He is facing several charges including a felony charge for possession with intent to distribute.
Jumal could face up to 15 years jail time for the charges. A former coworker, Mike Hassell, has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Jumal’s legal fees. The fund has raised more than $10,000 from Monday evening. The fund is available here.
Hassell says, “The cannabis community has really stepped up to support Jumal and it makes me proud to be a part of it.” The issue is a sobering example of clumsy handling of cannabis law. It’s a reminder that we are not yet out of the woods to safely enjoy cannabis nationwide.

President Biden Orders Cannabis Schedule Review
The President announced a bold order for the Department of Justice and Department of Health and Human Services to review cannabis schedule reform. The announcement includes a three step plan to “pardon all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession.”
Second, President Biden is “calling on governors to pardon simple state marijuana possession offenses.”
Third, President Biden is directing HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and US Attorney General Merrick Garland to start the review process of cannabis scheduled under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
About the current marijuana schedule classification, Biden says “It makes no sense”.
President Biden’s steps are unlikely to have an immediate impact for folks incarcerated for possession. There are currently 149 people in federal prison for simple cannabis possession. Optimistically, Biden’s choice to include both departments in the review should ease concerns for senators who oppose legalization for public health concerns.
